"The war will end in Sri Lanka. But to achieve this, citizens must say no to war. Citizens should not be bystanders but play an active role in demanding for a negotiated solution and a political solution with dignity for all." |

"Amongst those who believe in preventing man-made disasters the challenge is to persuade people at all levels of society that we as individuals can make a contribution to building a peaceful and stable enviroment within ourselves, in our neighbourhood and in the societies we live in." |

"The people of this country need to move beyond suspicion based on ethnic or religious differences and work together to reform and transform a society that is riddled with corruption, poverty, violence and indignity into a just society with a common future. It is not only the politicians and public servants who have a responsibility to ensure this transformation, but also the citizens of the country."

"The implementation of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution will be a step forward to addressing the National Question. It will build some confidence in the Tamil and Muslim communities that the government is seeking a political solution; it will also let the Sinhalese people see that the government is not committed only to the pursuit of war to the exclusion of everything else, and it will signal to the international community that an acceptable first step is being taken."

"The final war has begun. There is little that can be done by the citizens of the country. The media will be muzzled and censored and disinformation will be an instrument of the war. The psychological war will churn up figures of military victories and triumphs which will hide the ugly face of war."

There is no question that it is only a strong and vibrant people’s movement can eventually recover from the catastrophe engulfing the country. The political class has failed and failed miserably. But building a peoples movement under conditions of war is not easy. But it has happened and out of war eventually peace has to come and it is important that broadest coalition of forces emerge to face up to this challenge. |

"The death of the CFA spells Sri Lanka’s growing isolation from the West and a rejection of its values. Internally, it means that the notion of a multi ethnic and plural society will be rejected and replaced by a Sinhala Buddhist state where minorities will only be tolerated. It suggests that we do not have to adhere to international norms of conduct. The imperatives of total war will decide how to define human rights, peace and good governance. All of these concepts will be subservient to the imperatives of war."
